Insomniac drops Resistance

Overstrike developer won't be making any more entries in Sony-exclusive first-person shooter series, according to CEO Ted Price.

Insomniac is done with Resistance. Speaking with VG247 at Southern Methodist University's Game::Business::Law Summit, CEO Ted Price said the developer was finished working on Sony's exclusive first-person shooter series.

"We won't be making any more Resistances," Price said.

Insomniac departing the sci-fi shooter series was first hinted at in August. At the time, studio creative director Marcus Smith said the company was ready to branch out from the franchise and was not slated to make a follow-up to Resistance 3.

The studio's latest project is Overstrike, which was officially announced at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo in June. A squad-based stylized shooter, the game is the first multiplatform project at Insomniac Games.

Outside of Overstrike, Insomniac Games recently created a Facebook and mobile division dubbed Insomniac Click. This shop opened up last March, but there is no indication as to what the label is presently producing.

Netflix abandons game rental plans

In earnings call, CEO Reed Hastings says there are "no plans" to offer games by mail.

In October, Netflix said it was "still considering" whether or not to offer game rentals after it killed off its offshoot, Qwikster. Now, the company has dropped all plans to pursue the gamer's dollar.

During yesterday's fourth-quarter earnings call (attended by GameSpot sister site CNET), Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said there are "no plans" to offer game rentals to subscribers.

This announcement comes as an about-face to sentiment expressed by Hastings alongside the announcement of Qwikster in September. At the time, Hastings said, "Members have been asking for video games for many years, and now that DVD-by-mail has its own team, we are finally getting it done."

Game rental through Netflix would have offered consumers Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii titles for an unspecified additional charge. The move would have put Netflix into more direct competition with established by-mail game rental company GameFly.

Additionally, yesterday's fourth-quarter earnings call saw Netflix beat reduced guidance. The company reported global revenue of $876 million, up 47 percent over the year prior. And although net income dropped 15 percent to $40.7 million, it represented a major jump from Wall Street's expectations, according to CNET.

Additionally, the company's fourth-quarter results saw Netflix attract an additional 220,000 subscribers, bringing the media giant's total user base to 21.6 million. DVD users dipped by 2.7 million users, and Netflix brought in 1.86 million overseas subscribers.

Wii U arriving this holiday season

Tablet-based console coming to the US, EU, AU, and Japan before year-end; Nintendo reveals operating loss of $624 million; 3DS sales climb to 15 million, Wii to 94 million.

The Wii U is launching during this year's holiday season, according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. The new tablet-based console will launch in North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia before the year is out.

The announcement followed Nintendo's quarterly financials for the period April to December last year, which revealed an operating loss of ¥48.4 billion ($624 million, £397 million) down from a ¥49.6 billion ($640 million, £407 million) profit for the same period in 2010.

Nintendo is now predicting an annual operating loss of ¥45 billion ($580 million, £370 million), dwarfing analyst expectations of a ¥4.2 billion ($54 million, £34 million) loss. Nintendo also cut its forecast for annual sales of the Wii to 10 million from 12 million, and sales of the 3DS to 14 million from 16 million.

"We had higher expectations for the year-end season, but failed to meet them," Iwata told reporters.

Nintendo already slashed the price of the 3DS in an effort to boost sales, just six months after its launch. Today, Nintendo updated sales figures for the 3DS, saying it has now sold 15 million units worldwide since launch. Additionally, the Mario maker said lifetime sales of the DS family of systems (of which the 3DS does not belong) now stands at over 150 million.

As for the Wii, lifetime global sales for that console now stand at 94 million units.

The less-than-rosy financials come amid increased competition from rivals Microsoft and Sony, whose Kinect and Move motion controllers compete with the Wii. Nintendo also faces a tough time in the handheld market, thanks to mobile devices such as the iPad, iPhone, and Android.

On Tuesday, Apple announced its quarterly earnings, revealing record-breaking numbers of $46.33 billion (£29.5 billion) in revenue and profits of $13.06 billion (£8.32 billion). The company now boasts a cash stockpile of over $98 billion (£62.4 billion).
